Septima Poinsette Clark-Ida B. Wells-Fannie Lou Hamer-Ella Baker

Septima Clark developed the literacy and citizenship workshops that played an important role in the drive for voting rights and civil rights for African Americans in the Civil Rights Movement. Male activists commonly underappreciated Septima Clark's work. She became known as the "Queen mother" or "Grandmother" of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States.

Ida Bell Wells-Barnett was an American investigative journalist, educator, and early leader in the civil rights movement. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She dedicated her life to combating prejudice and violence, and the fight for African-American equality, especially that of women.

Fannie Lou Hamer Townsend was an American voting and women's rights activist, community organizer, and a leader in the civil rights movement. She was known for her use of spiritual hymnals and quotes and her resilience in leading the civil rights movement for black women in Mississippi. She was extorted, threatened, harassed, shot at, and assaulted by racists, including members of the police, while trying to register for and exercise her right to vote.

Ella Josephine Baker was an African-American civil rights and human rights activist. Baker criticized professionalized, charismatic leadership; she promoted grassroots organizing, radical democracy, and the ability of the oppressed to understand their worlds and advocate for themselves. She realized this vision most fully in the 1960s as the primary advisor and strategist of the SNCC. She is known for her critiques not only of racism within American culture, but also of sexism within the civil rights movement.

What I really feel is necessary is that the black people in this country wil have to upset this apple cart. We can no longer ignore the fact that America is not the... land of the free and the home of the brave.

One of the things that has to be faced is the process of waiting to change the system, how much we have got to do to find out who we are, where we have come from and where we are going.

Until the killing of black men, black mothers' sons, becomes as important to the rest of the country as the killing of a white mother's sons, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until this happens.

I have always thought that what is needed is the development of people who are interested not in being leaders as much as in developing leadership in others.

Remember, we are not fighting for the freedom of the Negro alone, but for the freedom of the human spirit a larger freedom that encompasses all mankind.

In order for us as poor and oppressed people to become part of a society that is meaningful, the system under which we now exist has to be radically changed... It means facing a system that does not lend its self to your needs and devising means by which you change that system.
